7 Festive Family Events in and Around South London

As the festive season fast approaches, London begins its annual transformation into a glittering, sparkling, mulled wine infused hub of Christmas activity.

The streets twinkle under golden Christmas lights, with houses and shops adorned with lavish decorations, and Christmas trees can be found around every corner. While the weather outside may be frightful, December in the city somehow makes it all so delightful.

So, throw those cozy blankets to one side, wrap up warm, and take the family out to enjoy the best festive activities and entertainment South London has to offer.

Rivoli Pop-up Cinema

Whether you're a die-hard Christmas movie fan, or a fan of watching Die Hard on Christmas, book into Rivoli Pop-Up Cinema between December 20th – December 22nd, and you can enjoy a whole host of classic festive flicks on the big screen while basking in the gorgeous ballroom surrounds.

The Ballroom itself is one the last remaining 1950’s ballrooms left in London, and if it seems familiar, that's because you may have seen it on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, or in a number of films including The Muppets and The Avengers – to name just a few of its cameos!

Winter Wonderland at Hyde park

Every year, Hyde Park is transformed into a Winter Wonderland. This festive favourite returns in 2024 for its seventeenth consecutive year, bringing a sleigh-load of fun with it for visitors between November 21st and January. 5th.

The fairground has rides and attractions suitable for all different ages, warming winter food and drinks, and a traditional Christmas market where you’ll be able to buy presents for all your loved ones.

While you're there, be sure to visit Santa Land - just step through Red Gate Landing and be instantly transported to the North Pole, where you can find Santa’s Grotto (of course) and if you’ve been good, there may be presents waiting for you.

Southbank Centre Winter Market

One of the most iconic festive destinations in London, the Southbank Centre Winter Market offers a magical riverside experience and runs until December 26th. From artisanal hand-made gifts and toys to festive treats and tasty food, it really is the ideal spot for a family day out in the heart of London.

What’s more, while shopping and browsing, you can enjoy live music, festive shows and entertainment, all framed by stunning views of the Thames River.

The Snowman (with Live Orchestra)

We all know The Snowman is a Christmas classic, but the addition of a live orchestra transcends the experience to a whole new level. Presented by Carrot Production, this award-winning special screening features some of the UK’s finest professional musicians and will be in Wimbledon for one night only – November 30th.

With a fun, festive introduction to the orchestra at the start — and even a visit from the Snowman himself — it really is an unmissable event for the whole family.

As an extra bonus, this year the Wimbledon performance will include a world premiere of the film The Snowman and the Snowdog – so make sure you book your place and be one of the first to experience the magic.

Christmas at Kew

Take the family on an enchanting journey through a glittering wonderland with Christmas at Kew, at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew.

Running until the 5th of January, this popular after-dark event will transport you away to a magical place, as you follow an illuminated path around the famous botanical gardens, marveling at tunnels of pure light, dancing lakeside reflections, and sparkling jewel-covered trees.

Alongside the mesmerising and immersive displays, you will find festive street food vendors offering hot food, tasty treats, and spiced winter warmers.

Glide at Battersea Power Station

Set against the backdrop of one of London’s most iconic buildings, Glide at Battersea Power Station features an impressive three interconnecting rinks, all under the shining glory of a spectacular 30ft Christmas tree.

Running from November 10th to January 7th tickets start from £16.00 for adults, £10.50 for children or £48.00 for a family ticket (2 adults & 2 children or 1 adult & 3 children), but there are lots of other packages to choose from.

Once you’re done on the ice, there is plenty more to do thanks to a selection of fairground rides, a wide range of big-name food and drink options, and more shops and market stalls than Santa could wave a candy cane at!

West Norwood Feast

Ready to feast? Then head down to West Norwood Feast’s Christmas Market on December 7th between 11am -3pm and you will find plenty of festive stalls and entertainment both inside and outside West Norwood Library.

West Norwood Feast is a volunteer-powered street market festival held every month from April to December, featuring over 100 market stalls, free live music, and various children's activities. The event showcases local artisans, fresh produce, and a variety of food stalls – all with a festive twist!
