Nestled in a quiet and leafy South London suburb, Denmark Hill offers fabulous views of the London skyline. A residential neighbourhood, the beautiful area is relatively quiet, but offers a real community feel with a large population of doctors and medical staff, and a haven for artists and musicians.
And at Urban Village, we made Denmark Hill our place to call home because of our love for people. ‘We are passionate about supporting our local community at Urban Village,’ says Founder Suzanne Vincent, ‘And with excellent schools, great parks and a thriving art scene, the area has built a friendly community who consider themselves lucky to live there. We know and love the area and with a creative vibe, it’s developed into a place for those after an interesting night out, or a cultural experience.’
Here’s just a few things we love about this urban village…
Seeing the arts
For a spot of culture on a Saturday afternoon, nothing beats an art gallery – particularly one that celebrates local artists and the community. And Blue Shop Cottage does just that. A gallery of original artwork by emerging artists, everyone is welcome to submit their art, or soak in the exciting art exhibitions that are designed to help artists grow. It’s a great place to support local artists, much like Clockwork Studios on Southwell Road, established with ‘the art community in mind’. From yoga fundraisers to open studios, it’s the place to buy original works direct from the artists or join in the events and exhibitions in their secret garden.
A glorious wide-open space with an ornamental pond, community garden, Arboretum and wildlife in abundance. From ducks to moorhens and even peacocks, it’s a great place to stretch your legs and enjoy the City of London landscape, including views of The Shard and the London Eye. Plus, you can volunteer in the park – from gardening to litter picking and volunteering to help at events such as the concerts at the Bandstand, or even taking on an active role on the committee, Friends of Ruskin Park allows you to give back to the community. Much like we did when we helped to keep the Ruskin Park Paddling Pool open, and commissioned local artists to create an urban mural to cover a wall plastered in random graffiti.
Drinking
With many pubs and bars in Denmark Hill, you can choose the right one for your perfect evening out. Starting with The Phoenix – housed in a beautifully restored railway station building, its full of character and quirky charm. Ideal if you enjoy a laid-back, homely atmosphere, much like the Grove House Camberwell – offering views of the City with a heated front patio (fully supplied with blankets for the colder days). But if you prefer a more lively setting, The Joiners Arms might be more appealing, with award-winning quiz nights, open mic evenings and live bands. And not forgetting the options in the other local areas, which are only a small walk or bus ride away – with Coldharbour Lane in close proximity, travel couldn’t be simpler.
Lunch and dinner
From Vietnamese to Chinese and Caribbean cuisine, you’re guaranteed to find a night of fine dining in Denmark Hill. Offering well know Vietnamese street food, Vietcafe is very popular in the area, and with outside dining, you can make the most of those rare sunny days at this time of year. Tapete is also delicious – the perfect place to have a great time in a warm environment with a unique Spanish menu. And for something a little different, Delly’s Caribbean Cuisine comes highly recommended, where ‘you’re right at home in the Caribbean’. For the taste of pizza, Flour To The People in Coldharbour Lane is an excellent choice – and it’s open every day 8am-10.30pm, serving baked goods for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Coffee breaks
When it’s time for a coffee break in Denmark Hill, you’re spoilt for choice. We Are Lumberjack Coffee not only serves speciality coffee, but craft beer, gelato and a selection of desserts – plus, if you want to buy lunch for someone working on the frontline, you can pay and the team will distribute it for you. If coffee is what you need after a long train journey, fcb coffee is open at Denmark Hill Station from 6.30am, ready for that early morning commute or post-workout boost. And for a modern, quirky coffee shop with a variety of pastries and hot food, you need Mono – it’s cool, cosy and the best place to lift anyone’s mood.
