THE TOP FIVE HOUSE PLANTS FOR 2019

House plants are an easy - and inexpensive - way to inject character into your home. They help to present your house in the best possible light. They add extra polish, warmth and style, improve the air quality and your mood. They give your home an added edge. All useful tools in today’s trickier housing market.

Decorating with plants is a huge trend this year - considered the unsung hero of interior design. And when it comes to selling in today’s market, it's worth getting them right.

These are the house plants to own in 2019:

  1. The Chinese money plant, aka Pilea peperomioides, above. All over Instagram and Pinterest and now all over our homes - it’s a cult favourite. Easy to keep going and a fast grower.
  2. Geraniums. Once considered fusty and only taking pride of place in our grandma’s gardens - these blousy blooms have now swung back into fashion potted up inside and out.
  3.  The fiddle leaf fig, below. No millennial home today could be seen without one. The latest incarnations include: the Ficus ‘Audrey’ plant which is supposedly easier not to kill off.

  4.  Cacti. Tough, no nonsense, very hard to kill even for those who even find mint hard to keep going. Look great planted in groups of three. Good for bathrooms too.
  5. Monstera deliciousa - also known as the Swiss cheese plant, below. Great to liven up a dull corner of a room, these beauties can grow very tall so will need some staking or support.
