Top spots for family days out in South London

There is nothing better than spending a day out with the family on the weekends. Luckily, South London is practically overflowing with options on how to spend your day with the kids – whether it’s museums, parks, activity centres, or anything in between.

If you’re based in the South London area and looking for ways to entertain the kids, or an opportunity for some much-needed family bonding time away from the screens, here is our list of top recommendations in the area for a family-friendly day out.

Have a picnic at Brockwell Park

On Herne Hill, just south of Brixton, you’ll find the park beloved by locals: Brockwell Park. Spanning 50.8 hectares, and home to a network of ponds, trees, walled flower gardens and wide, open meadows, this park is the perfect way to soak up the sunshine and let the children blow off some steam.

Pack a picnic, keep an eye out for the many historic buildings such as the 19th-century Tritton clock tower, or even seek out the charming ride-on miniature railway for the kids to enjoy. Surrounded by wide, open spaces and beautiful views, it’s the perfect day out for children and parents alike – and is totally free of charge.

Visit Deen City Farm

Nothing says a family day out quite like a visit to your local farm. In the heart of South London, just outside of central Merton, you’ll find Deen City Farm – a registered charity and one of London’s oldest community-run farms.

Set across 5 acres, the farm is free to enter, and offers a farmyard filled with traditional British breeds, as well as a riding school, garden, café and gift shop. Have a lovely walk around the grounds, pet and feed the farm animals, and finish the afternoon with a homemade cake and cup of tea at the Brioche Farmhouse Café.

Walk with the dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park

A walk in the park is rarely enough to entertain young children. But Crystal Palace Park is no ordinary park. If you want to get the kids away from the screens and out in the fresh air, there’s no better family day out than visiting the famous Crystal Palace Dinosaurs.

These aren’t just any dinosaurs, but the world’s first dinosaur sculptures to ever be built, first unveiled in 1854. The many statues scattered across the park have continued to delight both children and adults alike for over 150 years. Wander through the specially designed landscape and spot the Jurassic sculptures across the lakes. Not only does it make for a lovely, scenic walk, but it’s sure to excite and entertain the little ones.

Go Ape at Battersea Park

This one is for those who aren’t afraid of heights. If you’re looking for something a little more adrenaline-fuelled than a stroll in the park, then head over to Battersea Park for a fun afternoon at Go Ape.

Think large green spaces, zip wire flights, wobbly bridge crossings, and a course that is twice the height and length of most other Go Ape courses. Set high up in the treetops, this is a thrilling activity for all ages – so long as you are over 1 metre tall.

Get creative at the Pottery Café

Therapeutic for you, and great fun for your kids – a day at the pottery painting studio makes for a memorable family day out. The Pottery Café in Battersea offers a vast range of hand-cut decorating sponges, as well as displayed examples of decorated pottery to inspire your own designs and create your own hand-painted pottery masterpieces.

During your visit, you’ll be offered plenty of expert advice and assistance from the staff, as well as an array of hot drinks and snacks to elevate your pottery painting experience.
