As you know, local community is at the heart of Urban Village and it’s been incredible to see businesses in our local South East London area going above and beyond during what has been such a difficult year.
At Urban Village, we love our local community – and supporting smaller businesses is really important to the whole team. Which is why we want to shine a spotlight on the many companies that are showing such strength and resilience during one of the worst years we’ve all experienced. They really are such a credit to everyone who lives and works in Denmark Hill, Camberwell and the surrounding postcodes – whether they’ve got sheer determination to not give up; or they’re feeding the doctors and nurses at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Maudsley Hospital; or just sending out positive vibes, we want to say thank you.
Over the next few months, we'll be sharing more news on our local heroes, how they are keeping community spirits high and why we all need to support them as much as we can.
Find out more about the businesses of SE5 that are open and operating, and ways to support them support the local community over at the SE5 Forum.
Lumberjack Cafe in Camberwell
Right in the heart of Camberwell on Camberwell Church Street, charity-owned café Lumberjack has remained open seven days a week for delivery and collection since the start of 2021. Serving delicious fresh produce such as cheese, cured meats, coffee, bread, jams and even wine, there isn’t much you won’t find in this gorgeous small deli, come café. And at the moment, you can even buy lunch, or a bundle of lunches for NHS workers at King’s College Hospital.
As the team says on their website: ‘It’s only a small gesture when compared to what they’re doing for us, but by feeding our frontline workers, we can help them carry on with their vital work during long and demanding shifts. You buy it, we’ll distribute it!’
It’s simple – you can either buy lunch (or a bundle of lunches), which includes a main, a drink, and a snack for someone working on the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lumberjack will then pay it forwards – so if you buy 10 lunches for example, they’ll make an 11th for no extra cost.
Theo’s Pizzeria in Camberwell
Found on Grove Lane in Camberwell, Theo’s Pizzeria is currently open for deliveries and takeaways, seven days a week. From your classic margherita to wood oven aubergine and chestnut mushrooms, these are unlike any pizzas you’ve tried before. Not only that, but Theo’s is also running its own fundraiser during the pandemic by asking locals to buy a pizza for King’s College Hospital staff. The idea is that you buy a voucher for £5 or more – this donation then provides funds for Theo’s Camberwell to make and deliver free food to the frontline staff at the hospital. With vouchers valid for six months, Theo’s is ensuring our local frontline workers are well looked after well into the summer.
‘We initially started sending pizzas to the hospital in the first lockdown, as many of our regulars work here,’ Theo, the co-owner at Theo’s Pizzeria told us. ‘In fact, it was a group of doctors who had to cancel a table that helped us get the ball rolling. Since then, we have had an incredible response from the Camberwell community – it’s actually been staggering. Plus, the pizzas have gone down really well at the hospital and we often deliver six a week!’
Mono coffee shop in Denmark Hill
On Denmark Hill, you will find the Mono coffee shop serving daily homemade cakes, pastries, smoothies and sandwiches – you name it and they’ll have it for lunch. Open now for takeaway, the team there are fully COVID-secure, and continue to protect their customers and staff, all while smiling underneath their facemasks. Plus, they really are doing their bit for locals…
‘At Mono, we allow people from the hospital to buy food for their friends of colleagues to collect later,’ the owner Andrea told us. ‘In fact, this is something we’ve been doing for a long time – so it’s open to everybody, not just NHS staff. It’s our way of giving back to the community, but we’d like to do more to go that extra mile if we could.’
You heard it here first – if you’re popping to Mono for lunch and you want to buy your colleague a surprise sandwich, just ask Andrea – he’s ready for your order!
Don't forget to show some love and support to our local heroes!
